MPLAB Ten v2.XX: MacOSX ten.7 and above crave JRE6
If you lot accept Mac Bone X Lion, Mount King of beasts or Mavericks (version 10.7, 10.8, or ten.9 respectively) or anything newer, you need Java half dozen to run MPLAB X IDE. If y'all have encountered a Java 6 effect during the MPLAB X installation, please follow these instructions if this applies to you:
Your estimator doesn't have Java installed or has Java seven installed, but non Java half-dozen.
In this example, you need to download the update for Coffee half dozen from Apple by visiting this Apple Knowledge Base commodity. The download button for Java half dozen is in the upper right corner of the folio.
Java half-dozen and 7 should be able to coexist on your machine. The default JVM used to run applications will continue to exist Coffee 7 after the update is practical. The MPLAB X IDE installer will notice and use Java 6 once it is installed.
How to cheque your computer'south Java version
If you lot're not sure what version of Java is installed on your reckoner, open a Terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Last.app) and type this at the beat prompt:
java -version
This will study which default version you have installed on your computer. If Java is not installed, it will open up a window with a message most Java missing. In that case, see above to install Coffee 6.
If you have more than than one JVM installed on your machine, you lot can locate each of them by executing these commands:
/usr/libexec/java_home -v ane.half-dozen
/usr/libexec/java_home -v ane.7

Thanks for such a detailed information. Many a times user update it to java vii thinking a better version. But coffee vi yet supports many applications that java 7 don't.

Hi Jose Diaz,
I think it is correct best solution for MAC users with each and every step, for those who are getting bug in installing Java 6 or who are willing to upgrade its version.

What about security in Java?
Why practice you remember they put out one.vii?
Coffee needs to exist kept at electric current version for the organization I am on.
At present what?

I agree that Microchip should brand every try to keep up with the latest JRE releases. You are Then far behind now it's unbelievable.
For those testing on Yosemite developer preview, y'all can download the JRE6 and install it from .

Update: The current MPLAB X IDE paltform does non run well on OSX and JRE seven. We did already try this.
We do this for the other platforms already since they do piece of work well.
So for the Mac we have to wait until nosotros have migrated to the new Netbean 8 platform which is currently underway.
When nosotros go converted nosotros will ship the latest JRE7 with the IDE.

FYI, in OS X Yosemite, MPLABX 2.twenty works fine just can't notice the PicKit3 with an mistake:
Connecting to developer...
The developer could not be started: Could not connect to tool hardware: PICkit3PlatformTool, com.microchip.mplab.mdbcore.PICKit3Tool.PICkit3DbgToolManager
PicKit3 is properly detected in System Information, and MPLABX sees it while configuring the project.
Coffee is in version half-dozen:
$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_65"
Coffee(TM) SE Runtime Environs (build one.6.0_65-b14-466.1-11M4716)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-466.i, mixed style)
So I judge that a few affair is missing to make information technology work, simply I don't know what. Be careful when testing a beta version, sometimes goes wrong ;)
Re:MacOSX 10.seven and in a higher place require JRE6 2014/08/29 02:37:08 (permalink)
Simply re-install MPLABX 2.xv to get your PICkit3 to work again on Yosemite.
MPLABX works fine in os x x.10 providing you lot re-install and install Java 1.6.

Coffee ane.6 is so old now that it must exist embarrassing for Microchip to accept to keep asking people to re-install this.
It would be so much better if they but fixed the underlying trouble with the IDE so that it can piece of work with the latest JRE and JDK.
Do non exist surprised if Apple practise the same to Java equally they take already done with Flash.
If your flash player is out of date then Apple volition refuse to allow it to run. You are forced to update it.
In september/october when the World+Dog downloads Os X 10.10 Yosemite, the update routines remove all coffee from the system. We need a clear and definitive argument from Microchip on what versions are required, and where to get them.
To be honest, I don't sympathize why they don't just package a private copy of Java 1.6 with MPLAB X and install it along side the IDE in a subfolder. Then change the MPLAB X launcher to use that jre and non the system 1 (if at that place even is 1). That way no other apps outside of MPLAB 10 would have admission to JRE ane.6 and the rest of the system tin can run whatever version information technology choses.

To be honest, I don't understand why they don't just bundle a individual copy of Java 1.6 with MPLAB X and install it forth side the IDE in a subfolder. That way no other apps outside of MPLAB X would take access to JRE 1.6 and the rest of the system can run whatever version it choses.
you can edit the mplab_ide.conf in the mplabx awarding folder to force another location for JRE, i've tried 7 and 8 and both fail to even load mplabx which sucks!.

So testing PicKit3 on Yosemite, I have the same problem "guest" describes.
Yosemite public beta fresh install, Java vi & MPLabX two.15 reinstalled.
And I hold with security concerns. Java vi is actually old and non secure.

Hello
I have just updated my installation, I at present have JDK ane.7.0_65 in my Mac (OS 10.nine.2), and information technology runs ok with MPLABX IDE five 2.20
simply to tell that having ane.7 is possible (actually, information technology is mandatory to run Harmony Configurator plugin 0.6)

Just a quick caput-upward for everyone moving to Os 10.x Yosemite:
The install of Yosemite removes all JREs on your motorcar, so MPLAB 10 won't load, so you have to go back to the Apple tech note mentioned above and re-install JRE 6.

Kenny,
I tried this (Java 1.vi) just MPLABx 2.xx would start only not recognise the PicKit3. As well tried to Java i.eight but that did not seem to be recognised either.
I ended upwardly having to downgrade: but the most recent version of the MPLABx archive was 2.05.
So I'thousand running MPLABx 2.05 and Java 1.6 on the release version of Yosemite.
I am hoping that this volition exist sorted out *soon*.

I have tried every combination of MPLAB X and Java versions on Mac Bone 10.ten Yosemite, and all have failed to connect to my PICKit. I'1000 using the PKOB on the PIC24F Intelligent Integrated Analog Starter Kit.
The fault message I'g getting is:
The programmer could not be started: Could not connect to tool hardware: PKOBSKDEPlatformTool, com.microchip.mplab.mdbcore.pkobskde.PKOBSKDEDbgToolManager
If anyone tin offer some advice, I'd exist more than grateful. My workflow is impossible right now.

Aye, the IDE requires 1.6x on OSX, and thats a hurting, its very old, unsupported by Apple at this bespeak... just those of us trying to use Harmony find that the Harmony Configurator requires Java 1.7x and information technology volition not install with 1.6x.... Microchip has known near this issue for over iv mo now and nosotros still do non have a fix in the new 1.01 release of harmony!
Microchip, practice you test your software prior to release!
Allow your client aid you lot, put out alpha and beta version of your tools for u.s.a. to test and provide you with feedback prior to release!! Look at the open source community, they make this model work for them!!! and it provide solid working software!!! quick feedback on issues, and make'due south your customer role of your squad!!

I of the problems is that MPLAB X is based on NetBeans, which is not made or maintained by Microchip.
I believe the Mac OS X version of NetBeans which MPLAB Ten is based on has a dependency on Java 1.6.
I, for one, feel that using an IDE which is based on Java is a bad choice. Java is unsupported on Apple tree Mac platforms for good reason. It is an old architechture, that promised cross-platform drib and run compatibility, only never did evangelize it. Java withal uses a coffee virtual machine, and java byte lawmaking, in guild to reach cross-platform compatibility. Simply get this - very few (if any!) java apps are truly cross-platform. Most, including MPLAB Ten, have unlike builds for different platforms. (If this were not the case, you'd simply download a single JAR and it would run on any platform).
Then if you are doing a unlike build for each platform anyway, why not apply a properly compiled native language instead? By all ways abstruse all the hardware dependent stuff, merely notwithstanding maintain a core of common code. It's not hard, and I would bet my life that the man-hours required to practice that would exist no more the man hours required to fight with the whole java cantankerous platform nightmare. (I know what I am talking about, I worked for many many years for a company whose whole product line was java based, and supposedly cross-platfiorm).
And then at least the processor on which your IDE is running is running the actual IDE, information technology's not running an emulated virtual machine which is so running the byte code - information technology'southward a nonsense approach in the 21st century.
Secondly, do non exist surprised if ane or more than of the following happens:
1. Apple tree bans the JRE and the JVM completely from Mac OS X. (Goodbye Bye MPLAB X.)
2. Apple bans Java apps from the APP Shop.
iii. Apple Bans Java apps from the App Store, so requires that all Apps go distributed via the App store. (Bye Bye MPLAB Ten)
As it is, you are flight in the face up of Apple when yous use Java, they deliberately do not support information technology, and at every major update to Bone Ten they remove whatsoever JREs which are installed, which gives microchip a nightmare state of affairs for supporting their end users.
Microchips eggs are shared between Apple'due south basket and NetBean'south handbasket. If either ane gets dropped, MPLAB X goes back to existence a Windows merely IDE.
Microchip demand to wake up and realise that they are in the Hardware business, not the software business. Open source and certificate all of the programmer interfaces, and either requite the Ninety compilers away for free, or open source them.
I rarely chose Microchip parts to go in my new designs now, because the CX compiler license is over £g a seat. For me the gratis license is non good enough, except for the nearly basic of tasks, without a proper license your code is non optimized.
I use parts from Cypress, Intel, Atmel and others that give abroad professional quality evolution tools for free.
Many of them these days are based on GNU (GCC, GDB etc), which is a good quality toolchain, and when things get wrong, in that location are literally millions of other users out there who can help you.
If I were Microchip, On Mac Bone X I'd fix up custom projects for Xcode that would allow the developer to employ Xcode for all the lawmaking entry, and still employ the Ninety compilers - Xcode allows full customisation of the tool chain, and provides like shooting fish in a barrel configurations for using external compilers, pre and post compile steps, scripting, extensions and so on - why waste time maintaining a Netbeans configuration which has out of date dependencies, and irritates the users when there is a perfectly workable solution right there on the machine already.
